A new interpretation of The Last Supper

Commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Culture

The Japan-Italy Commercial Treaty signed between Japan and Italy on August 25, 1866 celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2016.

As a commemorative project, in September of this year, we invited Italian jewelry designer Giulio Manfredi to the jewelry collection venue of Hisashi Horaya Co., Ltd., an affiliated company.

Giulio Manfredi is an aristocrat from the historic city of Piacenza in northern Italy, and in 1973 launched his own brand "MANFREDI" as a revival model of traditional Italian goldwork art.

In 2009, the Italian Ministry of Culture commissioned Manfredi to work on a new interpretation to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the restoration of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper". One of the most famous paintings in the history of the world, "The Last Supper" underwent restoration from 1977 to 1999.

Manfredi created the work "L'oro invisible (Invisible Gold) 12 + 1" with his own interpretation, focusing on the figures of Jesus Christ and each of the 12 disciples depicted in "The Last Supper".

Reviving cultural heritage in the present age and building new artistic perspectives for the future

The Italian Ministry of Culture finds great value in not only restoring and resurrecting cultural heritage to the present age, but also adding new interpretations and expressions into the future.

The "L'oro invisible 12 + 1" exhibition was held from May 6th to July 4th, 2011 at Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie (World Heritage Site) and Pinacoteca di Brera (Architectural Heritage Site) in Milan, where "The Last Supper" is displayed.

Special installations* were created at these venues to showcase Giulio Manfredi's artwork and were promoted through cultural events and valuable publications.

From November 17, 2011 - February 19, 2012, "L'oro invisible 12 + 1" was presented alongside the "Leonardo・Genius・Myth" exhibition at La Venaria Reale, a palace built by former King Savoy in the 17th century in Turin, the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

From September 12 - November 12, 2016, "L'oro invisible 12 + 1" was displayed at Casa del Manzoni (Museum of Manzoni) in Milan. In September 2018, the exhibition graced the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, home to the world's largest collection of Leonardo da Vinci's sketches and memos.

* What is an installation?

One of the expression methods and genres in contemporary art, along with paintings, sculptures, videos, and photographs. An art in which works are placed indoors or outdoors according to the artist's intentions to form a space, and the place or the entire space can be experienced as a work. From this point of view, the Italian Ministry of Culture highly appreciates Giulio Manfredi's artwork as a way to bring valuable art back to the present day with a new interpretation. "

Coming to Japan for the first time in Nov. 2022

The installation exhibition of "Invisible L'oro 12 + 1" will be held

in the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum.

Nagasaki was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2018. The city has a history of deep faith in Christianity as well as the commitment to the preservation of Christianity despite the hardships of 259 years of severe oppression.

We believe that it is very meaningful that the first event will be held in Nagasaki

The event is scheduled for November 2022. The creator, Giulio Manfredi, is hoping for a reception, depending on the situation of Covid-19.
